Pua Mau Place, where flowers bloom in the desert, is a botanical garden and arboretum laid out on the west slope of the Kohala Mountains near Kawaihae. Pua Mau's specialty is perpetually blooming plants. Here you'll find hundreds of species of native and exotic flowers, trees and shrubs in a 15-acre garden with sweeping views of the ocean. The gardens feature a maze planted with 250 species of hibiscus, an aviary populated by about 150 exotic birds, and a collection or original sculptures.
The gardens, open daily, are located off Hwy 270 on Ala Kahua Drive (Kohala Estates), north of Kawaihae. Turn at the 6-mile marker and proceed 1/2 mile up the hill.
